Day Two

Talbot Bay

Across King Sound to Yampi Sound: silica-white beaches, a freshwater swim at Crocodile Creek, and the world-famous Horizontal Falls.

The water here is clear enough that you can see exactly what is in it.

Morning watch

Where the day began

Out on the tenders soon after eight, in under cliffs that fold over on themselves like closed books, on water the colour of a swimming pool. The second tender went right into the cave mouth. Later the boats ran out between the islands with the tide showing its seams across the surface.

In under the folded cliffs at ten past eight; the other tender already in the cave mouth.
Underway

The day's passage

Tenders all morning, in and out of the cliffs. By half past two somebody was looking down on the whole thing from the air.

Running between the islands, the tide showing its seams.
From the air: two boats on a sheet of green.
Golden hour

At anchor

It ended flat and orange, the hills gone to paper cut-outs and the water without a mark on it. Somewhere under all that, the shark was still going about its afternoon.

Last light. Flat water, paper hills.

Clear water is not the same as empty water.
